God Did It!

I can honestly say that I feel so blessed to have had some of the experiences that I have had in life concerning fashion. So many have asked me “How’d you do that?” or “How’d you get to work there and be a part of that?” concerning the fashion industry. I wish I had the perfect formula to give everyone, but the truth of the matter is – God did it!! My goal is to share with everyone that even when the odds are against you, you have to persevere against all odds. What we can’t do, God CAN!

I was fresh out of high school and off to college to follow my dreams. On my voyage of independence and opportunity, the road looked very bright until a detour happened. I finally had the opportunity to attend my dream college, but ended up in a situation that to myself and others may have seemed to be the end of my world. At the age of only 19, I was on my way to giving birth to a child instead of my dream of becoming a fashion designer. The same girl – who moved away to Chicago to attend fashion design school and who was adventurous enough to take a study abroad trip to Europe – took 8 steps backwards and moved back home for the support of her parents. … Continue Reading

Being “Fly” Doesn’t Have to Cost a Fortune: My 6 Favorite Ways to Shop Chic on A Budget

1. VINTAGE:

As a stylist/designer, in my opinion, vintage is always in! You can recycle a 50′s pin up, 60′s mod, and 70′s glamour look by thrift shopping at your favorite resale and consignment boutique! You’d be surprised at the treasures you can discover thrift shopping. In my own personal vintage adventures, I’ve come across designer names like old Christian Dior, Yves St. Laurent and Chanel, and even current designers like Marc Jacobs. You can take $20-$60 and leave your favorite second hand shop with hundreds of dollars of merchandise! Find an old vintage leather jacket and update the look with your favorite pair of jeans or mini skirt! … Continue Reading

Individuality: In the Box/Out of the Box

Who are you?  What do you like?  What comes naturally to you?

One thing we all know about fashion is that it comes and goes.  Though certain trends may change, one thing that will never go out of style is Individuality.

When we think of individuality in the category of style, we tend think of people like Erykah Badu, Lady GaGa, Nikki Minaj who are in the spotlight and known for their extreme costume-like wardrobe. But what about that really cool chick (Fly-Chick) that you always see at the beauty salon and want to know where she shops!?!  You may see girls who put an outfit together that you would have never thought of.  These individuals are bold enough to go against the grain and stand out.  It may not be of your interest to go against the grain when it comes to fashion, but if you are interested — don’t be afraid to try something new!

One thing I always keep in mind when I am styling, designing, or just dressing myself for a special occasion is to think out of the box.  What I mean by thinking out of the box is thinking out of the norm.  Instead of wearing one of my fancy pair of earrings in my ears, maybe I’ll wear them as a pendant — which I have done before!  When Erykah Badu debuted she didn’t just wear a small turban, she wore a head wrap that stood many inches off of her head to showcase her afro-centricity – out of the box!! J

For many women it is important to keep current with the latest trends and express themselves through how they dress, but for others fashion and choice of clothing may not be at the top of their to-do list.  However I guarantee that even those who are not as fashion conscious would not want to be dressed the same as their friend or classmate.

I challenge you to express yourself in whatever way that pleases YOU.  It’s not about being the trendiest or copying what you see the stars wearing, but I believe it’s more important to discover your own look.  Though you may wear a short hair-cut that is somewhat edgy and unique, if everyone has that same “edgy and unique” haircut, are you really standing out?

God created us all inimitably — none of us the same — so why not carry out that same theme in the way we dress?  I see the way we dress as artistic expression.  Some may not feel the need to express oneself or may not be passionate in the area of adornment, but if fashion is your forte, by all means make a statement — your own INDIVIDUAL statement!
